Our Busy Jack at Three and a Half

Last month, Jack hit the 3 1/2 year mark! Since we did an 18-month post for Georgie, we thought we'd share a little more about our Jack in the past six months since he turned three.

Jack is an absolute delight! He is a deep thinker and an avid learner. He has a sensitive heart and shows great compassion for others. He loves Jesus and likes to carry around his small New Testament and say, "Jesus died on a cross," (in a sad tone), "but now Jesus is ALIVE!" (in an excited tone!) He is so busy, all day long - coloring, building, throwing, swimming, reading, laughing, running. He is a really well-rounded kid, who likes to spend equal amounts of time playing baseball or any sport outside and poring over a new book for hours inside.

He is also a challenge to us as his parents - just as he always has been! His highs are HIGH and his lows are very low. He gets frustrated easily on some days, and on other days, he is low-key and pleasant all day! He has really matured in the past few weeks and seems more like a four year old than a three year old. He's learning to control his tears or angry outbursts (sometimes by laughing like a crazed man, but hey! Whatever works!), and he is very helpful when asked. Sometimes, his helpfulness goes a bit too far when he thinks it is his job to put George in time out!

He loves building things with blocks or cardboard or anything he can use. Trains used to be his favorite thing to make, but now he has a deep interest in "rockets to the moon". We've made dozens of rockets out of paper towel rolls, blocks, toilet paper rolls, etc. He shows a lot of imagination in some of the things he does. For instance, one day he decided to make himself a "one-man-band", by tying cymbals to his knees, strapping a drum to his back, etc. On one of our nature walks, he picked a small yellow round bloom and suddenly pretended he was Horton the Elephant talking to the "speck" on a clover! (Look for that picture in the montage!)

He really enjoys nature and we spend a lot of time outside. We recently spotted a bananaquit nest with tiny baby birds in it, and he is delighted when he hears them chirping for food. He found the long, blue tail of a lizard (probably the victim of the neighborhood cat) and decided to claim that tail as his personal treasure. When I made him throw it outside, he cried himself to sleep at naptime saying, "My lizard tail....my lizard tail." So, the next day, he found it again and I let him put it in a Ziploc bag (sealed with tape), which he proudly carried around. When I asked him to get it off the kitchen counter, he dutifully took it and stowed it in the lid of his desk!

His language has exploded in the past few months. He talks incessantly and loves to "read" books back to us or read them to George. He says such delightful things sometimes. When I say, "It is windy today." He'll say, "Yes, Mom, it IS windy today!" Or when he thinks of something new to play, he'll say, "I have a good idea!" He's a very grateful little fellow and often thanks me for the simplest thing...like pulling his covers up or helping him button his pants. It melts my heart.

He is a fairly picky eater, still, but he does enjoy a few unusual foods: broccoli, endamame, peas, rice, and roasted chickpeas!

Jack is an exuberant, lively boy who brings lots of sunshine to our lives. It is so amazing to watch him grow and learn and develop into a boy...no longer a baby.

Thank you, Lord, for our Jack and how his life blesses all of us!
