Chicago Trip: Hooray for Mitch!

On Tuesday/Wednesday of this week, we made a quick trip to Chicago in order to be there for our friend, Mitch, as he graduated from the Chicago Fire Academy!  We stayed in a hotel right down town, had dinner at an Irish Pub the night before, proudly watched him receive his badge along with about 150 other candidates in the ceremony at the Navy Pier, celebrated as he proposed to his girlfriend, Paloma, and had an Italian lunch with his wonderful family afterward.  It was quite a celebration!!!

The boys enjoyed it all - especially swimming in the pool on the roof of the hotel, eating breakfast at a huge McDonalds with escalators, taking taxi rides, seeing all the fire trucks, firefighters, bagpipes, etc., receiving their own kids version of the fire helmets, practicing saluting the flag and trying on Mitch's uniform hat.  They did NOT enjoy the suddenly cold, windy weather that sprung upon us during the ceremony!

It was a really neat experience - especially being with Mitch and seeing the reverence with which the city of Chicago loves its firefighters!  Free champagne toast at the Irish Pub, discounted flowers from the florist for the proposal, etc.  They are truly seen as heroes.  Now, we pray for safety and strength for Mitch as he starts his Chicago Fire career on Monday and as he and Paloma begin a life together.  We were so glad to be there for his special day and are so proud of all he accomplished while at the Academy!
