This year- because we had just finished studying early American history - the boys decided to dress the part of Revolutionary War soldiers. We ordered frontier shirts from a lady in Wisconsin, got some tricorn hats and a 1776 flag online and the boys made muskets out of old trampoline poles! Jack has been growing out his hair since December...partly because he wanted to truly look the part for his role in the parade!
The boys were cheered on by the crowds, but we were all a little disheartened to hear how many times they got comments like: "Oh look at the cute pirates!" As a history-loving family, we were annoyed and Josh finally said, "They're Revolutionary War soldiers - know your history, people!" Another time Jack said, "We aren't pirates! We are showing the whole reason we even have this holiday!" (That's my boy!)
After the parade, there is a great celebration in the town square and it is kicked off by foot races done by age group. Joe's age category was up first, and being the little athlete that he is, he was eager to try it out. Josh coached from the starting line and I was waiting at the finish line. He got a little bit of a late start...
...but stared down the competition with grit and determination...
...began to pull ahead....
...was almost tripped by his cheating opponent...
...maintained his focus...
...and raced ahead to finish first!!!
Our little champion!
Jack had a try next...but there were so many kids and while he is definitely a tremendous athlete already, he lacks a little speed when it comes to running. (It is not his fault...he is continually having to adjust to his rapidly-growing limbs!)
And even our Toby had a run with the older age group. He did his best! It was a fun time had by all! (George was content to cheer his brothers on!)
And it wouldn't be a proper Fourth of July post to not mention that Josh and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary. I can hardly believe it has been 12 years! I love him more each day and am so grateful for the years of memories and adventure we have had together!
